SUBJECT: REDRESSAL OF GRIEVANCE AGAINST THE BISHOP OF KANJIRAPPALLY DIOCESE
AND HIS PRIESTS WHO RUN THE ‘AVE MARIA RETREAT CENTRE’, KORATTY, KERALA.
Dear Most Holy Pope Francis, My Elder Brother in Jesus Christ,
Let me first introduce myself. I am an elderly woman aged 70 years, now residing at our native place, Koratty in Kerala, India. My husband Dr. Thomas Arackal (76 years), a cousin of Mar Mathew Arackal, the bishop of Kanjirappally diocese, is an Alzheimer’s disease patient for many years and for the last 6 years he is bedridden & unable to speak. We have no children.
We both had been working in Germany for about 40 years and with our hard earned money we bought 5 acres 5 cents (about 2 hectares) of land property near our home. It was with the intention to have a comfortable and peaceful elderly life in our mother land. But now, the entire property has gone in to the hands of Kanjirappally Diocese!
You may wonder how such a thing happened. May I confess that it was partly due to my blind faith in priests. In fact, before this shocking experience I was an ardent believer of Charismatic retreats and to the priests who conduct such programmes.
After our return to Kerala, I used to go to the ‘Ave Maria Retreat Centre’ near our locality. On few occasions I had also shared some of my mystical experiences on the stage in the Centre. On one such occasion the director of the Centre, Fr. George Nellickal, jumped on the stage and announced that I was going to donate all our properties to the Centre and that the Centre was going to look after us in the future. I was astonished and could not utter even
a word, then.
Later, the director along with his team of preachers started influencing me to donate our property to the Centre and receive abundant blessings from God in return. They also brain-washed me with mesmerizing prayers and words to believe that the moment we register the land deed to the Centre, my husband would recover from all his illness and would start talking and walking. Won over by these words, I finally agreed to give half acre (50 cents) of
land to the Centre. Bishop Mathew Arackal also visited us several times for persuading us in this regard. Also I was told by the priests not to inform my relatives about this deal at any stage. I was forbidden from contacting my brothers and sisters by the Bishop and the Priests. It was in the year 2010.
Soon it was time for us to leave for Germany for my husband’s treatment. While preparations were going on for the journey, in the evening of 14th team of priests came to our residence with an official from the sub Registrar’s office for the official registration process of the land. When I told them that the registration could be done only after our return, they insisted us to sign at least an agreement so that they could be assured of the deal. Then all of them started a prayer session and in the midst of its mesmerizing atmosphere we both were led to sign, in a hurried manner, at all the places shown by the official.
It was only after 2 years we came to know that we were cheated. The priests were making us fools by making us believe that it was only an informal agreement paper. Infact, the blank papers we signed were real Stamp-papers which had been filled up and registered later in the name of procurator of the Diocese! And, they had registered our entire property of 5 acres 5 cents, instead of the promised half acre!
Knowing this, I went and pleaded them to give back the property other than the promised plot. But, our plea fell on deaf ears!
Then, I personally requested the bishop Mar Mathew Arackal to intervene and arrange to get the property back to us. He was very arrogant saying it could not be returned because once anything is donated to the church, the act cannot be reversed at any cost. Then I communicated about the issue to all the Syro-Malabar bishops, including its major Arch Bishop Cardinal George Alancherry. Arch Bishop of our Arch Diocese, Changanessery, replied that as the Arch Diocese was not involved in the matter he could not intervene in it and that the Bishop of Kanjirappally alone can solve the problem. There was no other response from any other bishop.
After the futile attempts with the Church authorities, I approached ‘Adalath’ (Settlement) court for a peaceful settlement. Though the judge advised the priests to return the property to us, they refused to do so and said that they were ready to face any legal
proceedings.
Meanwhile, I had conducted a press conference and made the issue public. Many progressive Christian groups came to support me. Then we jointly raised the issue by protest marches to Kanjirappally Bishop’s House, and also to the Arch Bishop’s House of
Changanassery Arch Diocese. In both the places, the diocesan authorities deployed thugs with a mafia style along with members from youth organizations of the Dioceses and physically assaulted us and prevented our march from moving ahead.
Now, I have filed a petition in the Judicial Sub Court, Pala, pleading for return of the land from the Kanjirappally diocese to us. But, I know for certain that I am too weak a person to fight with the ‘mighty church’ which have immense wealth to adopt any kind of legal obstructions.
So, I am looking up to you too, dear Pope, for the redressal of my grief which has occurred due to intransigence of a bishop who is directly under you. I hope that you would kindly advice Bishop Mathew Arackal to do justice by returning the property to me and my handicapped husband. Now, with our limited income we are struggling hard to find money for my husband’s costly treatment & nursing and also for our day to day life.
I read a lot about your acts of mercy and your all out efforts to take the Church towards Jesus Christ, our Lord. I also came to know about many innocent women who were pacified by your kind words and deeds. Please consider me also as one among them.
I remain, In the Union of Jesus’ Love,
Monica Thomas, Arackal
