ReplyDeleteWhat captured my attention in this article is the myth created around the glory of virginity that allured thousands into priesthood and celibate life during the past two thousand years. It originated from a dissected concept of man as body and spirit and the spirit standing a degree higher over the body. It has its origin in the view of the whole creation in various levels, culminating in man. This view is totally outdated and vulgar. The only sound understanding is to see the whole of creation as one and all inclusive of the divine energy. There, even the distinction between man and woman is irrelevant. In this view, even the tiniest being has its perfection. In a beautiful book called The Fascinating World of Bees, (Russian authors Rodionov and Shabarshov) there's a remark by Johann Dzierzon, a famous Polish-German beekeeper, that he who treats bees with genuine love and care, observing them with his utmost attention, this man almost always proves to be a good person, a devoted and brave citizen, and a true friend. I mean to extend it to every creature in this universe. To be able to see it in its entirety is an art and leads to perfection of mind. For perfection is inherent in everything. To concentrate our attention to a single part of anything leads us astray. The Church had been lead astray miserably in many fundamental things.
That's what happened to the Church especially in regard to virginity and celibacy. It went even to the extent of denying Mary her motherhood on the pretension that she could not have lost her virginity even at birth of a child! How ridiculous! This nasty humbug lead thousands to choose a life without sex, on the false belief that it has something to do with great sanctity. A better understanding of human nature gives courage to many men and women to evaluate their life anew and at the end they choose the better way they have found.
