Friends-of-Kottoor-Seminar in New York

Role of Indian Americans in US
Loka Samastha Sukhino Bhavantu (may the whole world be happy), Vasudeiva Kudumbakam (Entire world is God’s family), One God one religion, one caste (human caste), Manava Seva Madava Seva (Service of man is service of God).
Let these electrifying thoughts of Indian wisdom, genius and spirituality coupled with the inputs of Jesus’ prayer: “Our Father in heaven, Thy kingdom come…” lead you, guide you and drive you with lightning speed to achieve the ideals of “World citizenship” -- not stopping with US citizen ship -- in this Knowledge Era of globalization and one world without borders, said Dr. James Kottoor, addressing a gathering, held at the Indo-American Yoga Institute, in Yonkers, New York on June 9th. 2012.
Dr.Kottoor was Chief Guest at a one day seminar on “Role of Indian Americans in US” in today’s Knowledge Era of globalization and internet, organized by the “Friends of James Kottoor” in New York.
After the Welcome Speech by Mr.Thomas M.Thomas, Treasurer, Kerala Samajam, New Jersey, Mrs.Alphonsa Bernard, originally from Madras and Office Manager 45 years ago in the then New Leader, a 100 year old English weekly, was the one who introduced the Chief Guest. She explained how Dr.Kottoor made New Leader “almost like a wild fire, a sort of a city set on a hill or as Jesus would have, a lamp lit and lifted on a lamp stand to enlighten all” with the help of renowned writers like Dr. Tissa Balasuriya, Dr. W.T.V.Adisheshaya, Dr.Jacob Mullore, Dr.J.C. Kuriakose, Dr.Clarence Motha etc.
A gathering of 33 intellectuals, media men and prominent persons which included Mr. George Joseph of India Abroad and E-Malayalee, Moideen Puthenchira, freelance writer, Jose Kadapuram, Kairali TV, USA, Dr.Teresa Antony, former fulltime Professor, City University NY, Mr. Raju Thomas, Secretary, Kerala Center, NY, Attorney Gheevarghese Thankachan, NY, Jacob Kallupurackal, Attorney, Boston, Mr. Gopinath Kurup of FOMA, Rev. Dr.Varghese Abraham, Indian National Oversees Congress, USA, Mr. M.K. Mathews, President, Indian American Malayalee Community of Yonkers, Mr. Joseph Mathew of Almaya Sabdam, Mr. P.T. Paulose, Publisher of Rationalist Magazine, Mr.George Padiyedath, Mr. Raju Abraham, Kairali Homes and others.
Change for Better
To drive home the need of speedy change in a notoriously change-resistant Kerala community first, and Indian community next, Dr.Kottoor quoted the essence of Gita: “CHANGE ALONE IS THE UNCHANGING LAW OF NATURE,” and words of blessed Newman, “In a higher world it may be different, but here below to live is to change and to be perfect is to have changed more often” and warned the audience not to get dumped in the dust bin of history by resisting constant, constructive change for the better.
Do not prolong any more, pleaded Dr. Kottoor, the agony either of a racial segregation in US, or a condemnable caste, religion and ideology based brutal atrocities like the latest dastardly murder of T.P. Chandrasekar in Onchiam, Kerala, India, and urged the audience to take seriously the prophetic warnings of historic Luminaries.
Tagore taught us to break out of narrow domestic walls, Vayalar Ramavarma of our narrow religion and ideology based isolations, Gunnar Myrdal’s “American Melting Pot” that refuses to melt into each other, taught us to stop living in ghettos, Kennedy’s Peace Corps to break out of international barriers to become globally relevant for peace and prosperity. Martin Luther King taught us to judge people “not by the color of their skin but by the content of their character,” President Obama taught us “Yes-we can”reach the stars by setting US presidency his target from his tender age in Indonesia.
Break down Barriers
Speaking on the present Knowledge Era and Internet Dr.Kottoor said, Marshal McLuhan coined the concept of instant communication reducing the whole world into a global village. Internet penetrated the iron curtain to break up the USSR, it brought down the Berlin wall, and now in its new Avathar as the Arab Spring or Jasmine Revolution in the Middle East, it is overthrowing dictators in countries like Tunisia, Egypt and Libya, shaking governments in India through Anna Hazare and in US through“Occupy Wall Street” agitation.
In today’s knowledge era what counts most is not muscle power, military power or even money power but Brain Power and young energetic human resources. In that sense China and India top the list of World Leaders with vast human resources. Man goes only where his mind goes and one who controls the minds controls the whole world. Shining example in this art is President Obama who has the know-how to convey ideas convincingly with his masterly command of Lingua Franca (English) and to hold a critical audience spell bound for hours. The truth is, with yesterday’s know-how you can’t get today’s jobs and with today’s know-how you can’t get tomorrow’s jobs. This calls for the need for speedy change and that, for the better in gathering convincing ideas and empowering oneself with the gift of the gab to convey them across all divisive boarders.
US Situation Today
Coming to the central issue of the Role of Indian Americans Dr.Kottoor pointed out that US today has a population of over 312 million most of whom are hooked to the internet. He then asked to compare it with India which has over 400 million connected to Internet and 800 million to Mobile phones. It means in India more than the total population of US is interacting with the global community to make friends and influence people.
The population of Indian Americans in US is 3.2 million or one in every 100 Americans. What is their contribution to American culture and society? asked Dr.Kottoor. In the political arena at least, with Bobby Jindal and Nikki Haley as governors in Louisiana and South Carolina they are rendering not just their due 1% but more than 2% of their strength. Educationally more than 65 % of Indian Americans have Bachelors and 40% a Master’s in various professional fields. According to statistics provided by Mr.Raju Thomas who spoke later in the day, 3.2 million Indian community make up 38 % Doctors in US, 12 % of Scientists, 36% NASA Employees, 34% of Microsoft Employees, and 28% IBM Employees in US.
But the capacity of Indian Americans in general to wield the Lingua Franca (English), according to Dr.Kottoor, to connect with people beyond their community to converse, convince, build bridges and melt into the national culture is said to be minimal. This is cited as the main hindrance preventing their upward movement to become a force for good at various strata of social, professional fields in the country.
Hope is our Youth
It may be difficult for the older generation to excel in the tools of global communication. Therefore Dr. Kottoor urged those present, at least to prod the younger generation to hitch their wagon to the stars imitating Obama who dreamt of becoming America’s president at a young age in Indonesia or act like Martin Luther King who wanted his children to excel in the content of their character. They have to be helped to grow up as GLOCAL (global and local) that is, absorbing whatever is good from the global culture without getting uprooted from their noble and inspiring Indian culture and traditions.
During the after Lunch session, Speakers Prof. Dr.Teresa Antony and Mr. Raju Thomas spoke on “Role of Indian Americans in the Socio-political and cultural areas in US” and Jacob Kallupurackal, Attorney from Boston spoke on “Religious Role of Indian Americans in today’s multi religious secular society in US”.
These speeches were followed by a lively discussion by participants. As a fitting conclusion Dr. Kottoor
requested the organizers to consider the meeting they conducted as the first “Think Tank” in a series to be organized and coordinated in various states at regular intervals for promoting the triple objectives of humanism, rationalism and globalism among all Indian Americans to help them break out of all narrow domestic walls, which Tagore admonishes to leave behind, to grow up and shine as World Citizens in today’s Era of Knowledge.
